Prerequisites
Completion of Canine I online and participant must be a Veterinarian, Veterinary Technician, Physical Therapist, Physical Therapist Assistant, Occupational Therapist or an actively enrolled student in one of these fields.  

Breaks & Lunches are included. 

Participants will be assigned to a lab group.  Depending on lab group size groups could have 1/2 day off however participants should plan to attend all full days.

This course is required for Veterinarians and Veterinary Technicians and actively enrolled students in these fields. This course is not required of Physical Therapists, Physical Therapist Assistants and Occupational Therapists or actively enrolled students in one of these fields but it can be used to fulfill the Canine V requirement.

Canine II VET:
Physical and Electrotherapeutic Modalities
This course will provide the participant with the didactic and clinical applications of selected physical agent modalities used in canine physical rehabilitation. Superficial heating and cooling agents, therapeutic ultrasound, extra corporeal shock wave treatment, cold lasers and neuromuscular electrical stimulation will be covered in the lecture, with laboratories to practice using the modalities.

Canine III VET:
Therapeutic Exercise Prescription and Aquatic Therapy

This course will provide the participant with the basic skills necessary to prescribe and provide therapeutic exercise programs for dogs. Benefits and risks associated with therapeutic exercise programs will be covered along with outcome assessment of exercise programs. Some of the topics covered will be; range of motion, strengthening exercises, aquatic exercises and exercises for wellness/prevention. Techniques will be practiced during extensive laboratories on live animals.

Canine III VET:
Therapeutic Exercise Prescription and Aquatic Therapy

Day 1:

  • Biomechanics and physiology of rehabilitation
  • Assistive devices, cart and slings
  • BREAK
  • Aqualtic rehabilitation; physics and C-V physiology, underwater kinematics, practical applications
  • Joint mobilization, end feels, goniometry and limb circumference
Day 2:
  • Lab 1: Goniometry, Limb Circunference and Functional Assessment Score
  • Lab 2: Aquatic Activities; underwater treadmill and whirlpool and Assistive Devices; slings, carts, balance board, Zuni and Hoyer life
  • LUNCH
  • Lab 3: Exercise; dancing, wheelbarrowing, backpacks, weights, syringe cap, cavalettis, physiorolls/physioballs, stairs and sit-to-stand
  • Lab 4: Force Plate Analysis, Land Treadmill and Lameness Scores
  • Lab 5: Basic Joint Mobilization and Range of Motion
Day 3
  • Evaluation and documentation of the rehabilitation patient
  • BREAK
  • Review of lab exercises and consideration sin developing an exercise program
