the following course on the Hip.

Description:
This course has been developed to offer clinicians the opportunity to learn the most contemporary and relevant techniques for the diagnosis, treatment, management and rehabilitation of hip pathologies.  The program will identify mechanisms of injury to determine whether the primary pain generator is intra or extra-articular hip structures or related to kinetic chain dysfunction.  Recognizing at which tissue layer the problem exists will allow clinicians to provide patients with more educated outcome predictors.  It will look at how the lower extremity articular and trunk structure, motion, weakness, and dysfunction affect the hip.  The continuum of diagnostics and care will be presented to insure your future patients are utilizing the most appropriate forms of medical, orthopedic, and rehabilitation interventions currently available at this time.   The course will offer empirical suggestions and interpretations of scientific evidence for returning patients to pain free non -compensatory movement promoting a full return to ADL’s, recreational activities and sport.

Outline

DAY ONE:
Hip Functional Anatomy and Biomechanics (8AM -9AM)

  • This section will provide an overview of normal hip anatomy and biomechanics.  It will address concepts of normal movements and normal gait considerations.  The layer approach to anatomy of the hip will be introduced.


Clinical Examination and Diagnostic Testing of the Hip (9AM -10AM)

  • This section will discuss clinical examination of the hip joint.  It will present aspects of the clinical examination, functional examination, and diagnostic testing


Break (10:00-10:15)

Developmental Hip Conditions (10:15-11:00)

  • This section will present an overview of pediatric hip conditions.  A spectrum of disease will be presented throughout aging relating to pediatric conditions.


Hip Patho-anatomy and Mechanics (11:00-12:15 PM)

  •  This section will discuss hip pathology as it relates to anatomic variation and pathomechanics.  It will discuss intra- and extra-articular hip patholgies.


Lunch (12:15 -1:15)


Differential Diagnosis of Hip, Spine and Trunk Conditions (1:15 -2:30)

  • This section will present clinical findings to differentiate hip, spine and trunk pathology.

 

Kinetic Chain Integration as it Relates to the Hip (2:30 -3:45)

  • This segment will integrate the lower extremity kinetic chain as it relates to the hip.  It will introduce how structural and mechanical influences relate to hip and kinetic chain pathology.

 

Break (3:45-4:00)

Athletic Pubalgia Etiology and Treatment (4:00-4:45)

  • This section will present the etiology and treatment of athletic pubalgia.  It will introduce its relationship to hip pathology.
 

Questions (4:45-5:00)

DAY 2:

Hip Surgical Intervention for Intra-articular hip patholgy  (8:00-9:00)

  • This section will present surgical intervention for intra-articular hip pathology.  


Hip Surgical Intervention for Extra-articular hip pathology (9:00-10:00)

  • This section will discuss surgical intervention for extra-articular hip pathologies.


Break (10:00-10:15)

Hip Arthroscopy Rehabilitation Phase 1-2 (10:15-11:00)

  • This section will present phase 1 and 2 of hip arthroscopy rehabilitation.  It will discuss literature and variance within post-operative protocols.

 

Hip Arthroscopy Rehabilitation Phase 3-4 (11:00 – 12:00)

  • This section will discuss phase 3 and 4 of hip arthroscopy rehabilitation.  It will present functional progressions for restoration of function and return to athletic activity.


Lunch (12:00-1:00)

Conservative Management of Non-Arthritic Hip Pain (1:00-1:45)

  • This section will present an overview of rehabilitation progressions for non-arthritic hip pain.  It will discuss an integrated kinetic chain approach to rehabilitation of the hip.

 

Soft Tissue and Manual Techniques for the Hip (1:45 -2:30)

  • This section will present an overview of manual techniques to address soft tissue and arthro-kinematic motion dysfunction

 

Break (2:30-2:45)

EMG analysis of the Hip and Trunk Musculature: A literature review (2:45-3:30)

  • This section will present a literature review of EMG research on hip and trunk musculature.  Rehabilitation progressions will be presented based on synthesis of these studies.

 

Return to Sport Testing for the Hip (3:30 -4:30)

  • This section will present return to sport testing of the hip.  It will integrate the usage of the Vail Hip Sports Test and other return to sport and function testing as it relates to return to athletic function


Questions (4:30-5:00)

Learning Objectives:

  1. To demonstrate an understanding of normal anatomy and biomechanics of the hip as it relates to function
  2. To present key clinical findings and diagnostic testing as it relates to diagnosis of hip pathology
  3. To learn patho-anatomy and patho-mechanics of the hip joint as it relates to different anatomical layers
  4. To review pediatric hip conditions and establish their relationship to progression with aging
  5. To be able to differentiate between hip and low back pain as it relates to kinetic chain linkage
  6. To review kinetic chain integration of the trunk and lower extremity and establish its relationship to the hip joint to assist in differentiating from common pathology such as athletic pubalgia
  7. To review surgical interventions for intra- and extra-articular hip pathology
  8. To establish a functional progression for hip arthroscopy rehabilitation with milestones for progression and return to sport testing
  9. To review commonly used manual techniques to address altered soft tissue, osteo- and arthrokinematics of the hip
  10. The review EMG literature of hip and trunk musculature and to synthesize this literature for a rehabilitation progression

  • Seminar includes coffee breaks and handouts. Lunch is not included.
