DESCRIPTION:
This two day course is designed to allow the attendee to be exposed to what are the presently accepted (evidence based procedures) to best treat patients with selected shoulder and knee complaints. In many ways, it is best viewed as a team approach (MD & PT) working together to maximize outcomes. This program is designed to go from "traditional" to "contemporary".
Day 1 - Shoulder: Much of our present thought regarding the shoulder has evolved through clinical observation and arthroscopic illumination. Unfortunately, the arthroscope allows elucidation of joint structure, not function. We believe the etiology of many difficult shoulder patients can be described through concepts of micro trauma. This process is of repetitive stress requiring tissue adaptation. We will begin the workshop with elucidation of glenohumeral instability treatments and then proceed into treatment of limited ROM and Rotator cuff pathology. We will end the day with patients presenting with more complicated and challenging conditions.
Day 2 - Knee: This course will address the multiplicity of problems confronting the clinician dealing with rehabilitation of the knee. Patients with these pathologies demand an "attention to detail" which is frequently not provided. This course will attempt to "contextualize" the learner to the historical development of the majority of commonplace procedures utilized in the clinic today through historical presentation, as well as developing an appreciation of the relevant literature of yesterday and today. It is hoped that personal opinions will be shared by participants, thus providing a fertile garden for exchange. The course is designed to allow a rich appreciation for evidence based management of selected knee conditions.
