Outline
This two-day manual therapy seminar offers a new and simple approach in manual therapy which has been developed by Brian Mulligan, F.N.Z.S.P., Dip. M.T. This course covers the application of mobilizations with movements (MWM’s) for lower quadrant extremity and spinal joint dysfunction. The course is designed for health care professionals licensed to perform joint mobilizations who wish to broaden their existing manual therapy skills for use within their defined scope of practice.
This course will enable participants to learn the indications for this new and simple approach to manual therapy in clinical practice. Past Mulligan course feedback has indicated the need for a more detailed presentation of techniques along with the development of clinical reasoning skills. This seminar is designed to meet those needs. This course is one of four courses leading to qualifications as a Certified Mulligan Practitioner (CMP).
The efficacy of this approach can be quickly and easily ascertained in clinic. MWM skills will be learned and it is an expectation of this course that those therapists with a normal caseload will find an immediate improvement in outcome measures with patients with restricted and/or painful movement.
Each agenda item consists of Live Lecture and Lab Participation/Assessment. Typically, at least 50% of the agenda item is dedicated to Lab Participation/Assessment.

Learning Outcomes:
All participants will gain an understanding of Mulligan’s concept of mobilization with movement. The participant will have enhanced assessment skills when examining extremity and spinal joints. They will have the guidelines necessary to apply, when indicated, painless techniques joint function. As with all manual techniques, handling skills are paramount and, at the end of the program, the true professional will be able to further develop this new field of mobilization with movement. They will learn taping techniques to maintain correction of functional movement patterns. The most important outcome is that patients will benefit from this new approach.
Learning Objectives:
- Have an appreciation of the concept of the Mobilization with Movement approach.
- Provide a thorough and in depth instruction and practice of the MWM techniques for the lower quarter
- Develop the knowledge and manual skills to successfully apply and integrate the MWM techniques
- Integrate taping techniques with Mobilization with Movement
- Understand the guidelines for safe and effective technique selection
- Improve clinical outcomes.
Day 1-
- Provide informed consent by describing one Mulligan Concept of Mobilization with movement technique to a patient with a joint dysfunction.
- Evaluate the potential presence of 1 positional fault in a patient with a joint dysfunction.
- Communicate 3, key guidelines that are to be expected of an MWM prior to performing a technique on a patient with a joint dysfunction.
- Apply 1 NAG technique with correct hand placement in a patient with multi-directional cervical motion loss.
- Demonstrate a RNAG in the upper thoracic spine for a patient with pain and loss of motion.
- Demonstrate 2 SNAG techniques in the cervical spine to improve ROM and decrease pain in a patient with cervical dysfunction.
- Instruct a patient in 1, self -SNAG technique to include in the HEP of a patient with cervical dysfunction.
- Recognize 3 symptoms/conditions warranting a Differential Diagnosis in a person with headaches.
- Apply a C2 Repositioning Headache SNAG to a patient with an acute headache.
- Demonstrate a MWM on a patient with shoulder pain originating from the spine.
- Recognize 3 potential variations in treatment applications in a patient with UE pain requiring a spinal mobilization.
- Instruct a patient in a self- spinal mobilization technique/MWM to address pain in the UE involving the spine.
- Demonstrate 1 SNAG technique for the lumbar spine in a patient with low back pain loss of ROM.
- Demonstrate the use of a belt in 1 SNAG technique for the lumbar spine in a patient with low back pain and loss of ROM.
- Demonstrate 1 prone SNAG with correct hand placement in a patient with a painful loss of extension ROM.
- Instruct a patient with loss of lumbar flexion in the Lion Technique to add to their HEP.
Day 2-
- Demonstrate 2, MWM belt techniques to improve ROM in a patient with hip pain/loss of ROM.
- Demonstrate 1 weight bearing and 1 non-weight bearing MWM technique in a patient with a loss of knee flexion ROM.
- Incorporate 1 taping strategy to eliminate pain in a patient with knee pain.
- Incorporate 1, MWM belt technique to improve Dorsiflexion ROM in a patient recovering from immobilization of the ankle joint.
- Demonstrate 1 MWM technique at the ankle joint in a patient with limited plantar flexion ROM.
